Episode 223: A Feast For Crows (PROLOGUE)

Oldtown Raven, by *Carolina-Eade via deviantART

Happy Monday, everyone! Welcome to our combination A Storm Of Swords wrap-up and A Feast For Crows Prologue episode! It's a pretty long episode, so buckle up!

Brendan talks about his final impressions of A Storm Of Swords and what his overall vibe is for the series so far. We also discuss an interesting comment that FTWard left on the final Tyrion chapter and Brendan and I get into an intense debate on who Tyrion is and what the nature of Tywin's actions are. While I don't agree with FTWard's thesis on this one, he makes a series of very interesting points that spark some great discussion.

Then Brendan makes some predictions as to what will be coming down the pike in A Feast For Crows, and I tell Brendan about how the book will not contain some of the POV characters that we've gotten used to seeing. So he makes some guesses as to what new POV's we're going to get, and what's going to happen with the remaining POV's that we already know and love.

And THEN we talk about the Prologue. What an interesting, detailed little story we get to start the book off! Pate is so in love with Rosy, and the way that he thinks about her in every other sentence is so cute; he's totally smitten. Of course as readers we know that these Prologues and Epilogues usually result in the death of that particular POV character, so it's tough reading about a guy who is not talented enough to achieve his dream of becoming a Maester but doesn't care anymore; all he wants is to be with Rosy, and we know that will probably never happen. And who is the Alchemist who shows up? Brendan makes a guess, what do you guys think?

I hope that you guys enjoy this episode, we will see you tomorrow!

  1. The prologue character in GoT does die in his chapter, it is the older ranger who is later beheaded by Ned (this is slightly different in the show).

  2. Great episode, thanks for taking the time to go into everything at the start of the week. A lot of people seem to like Feast less than the others, but I don't feel that way, I like Feast a lot more than Clash.

And Brendan, stay away from your mother-in-law this time, I don't trust her anymore. =D

  3. Wow, this was a hell of a packed episode. You guys are really spoiling (sigh) us.

Re: Tyrion, I feel it's a shame that his POV chapters are exclusive to Dance, because I was really anticipating your reaction to Tyrion's mental state and thought processes immediately following the events at the end of Storm. You guys built up a lot of momentum, and it's frustrating that we have to wait months and months before you can tackle any new Tyrion material (not as frustrating as having to wait five years for ADwD, mind you).

Brendan's prediction that Littlefinger would take Sansa on a tour of Westeros evoked disconcerting images of Petyr serenading her while the pair enjoyed a romantic (shudder) magic carpet ride.

  4. Sorry I just listened to this episode, I am intentionally behind on casts so I don’t end up jonesing if you guys miss a few days. Not that that would ever happen…

    Regarding ages and dates:
Jaime born 266, inducted into KG 281, killed Aeyrs II 283
Tyrion born 274, married to Tysha 287
I think those are accurate but feel free to correct.

Sorry the post was not entirely clear. The “The problem is Tyrion’s not Tywin’s.” quote was intended only about each character’s relationships with and views of sex workers.

No worries Natasha, I still wub you. It’s fun to discuss. We can revisit this after an ADwD chapter and you can try and defend Tyrion then.

  5. I really enjoyed all this talk of Tyrian and shae's relationship, etc. I especially agree with Natasha's comments about how Tyrion doesn't believe anyone could possibly love him. I wonder if this carries over into tyrions appearance as well. I feel like most Of the references to his grotesque appearance are made by Tyrion in his own pov's rather than by other characters. He may not actually be that ugly or weird looking ...but bc he thinks he's grotesque and we see it from his eyes....
