No joke, I saw this illustration before we even started doing the podcast and have just been waiting until I can use it. I love it SO much, the light, the details of the statue in the background (symbolism, anyone?), even the fur on the cape looks so real. Absolutely gorgeous illustration.
This chapter is a complete revelation. There are so many little details that we had assumed to already be explained (who doubted that Jon Arryn had been poisoned by Cersei!? I mean, really), and we find out even more about how involved Littlefinger is in EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THING that has happened in all the books so far. The story would literally never have happened without his machinations from the very beginning.
Lysa Arryn was one of the most appalling characters in the books, which was frustrating because she wasn't actually evil or anything, just really fucking delusional and unbalanced. Her obsession with Petyr is so strange, since he never seemed to hide from childhood that Cat was the one he really cared about, not Lysa, but it's like she's convinced herself that over time he came to love her just as much. Which we all know never happened. Oh, Lysa, you lovesick, creepy, damaged fool. Good riddance.
SO! What the fuck!? Brendan makes some guesses as to what this means, but it's awfully difficult to well.
Only the prologue left!

To use a couple of TV Tropes, this is when we see Petyr graduate from Smug Snake to Magnificent Bastard extraordinaire.
ReplyDeleteAnd in case you still need some Brendan, I believe Mind Moon Tea is colloquially known as half a bottle of tequila.
Amazing chapter, amazing book. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the end and as a book as a whole. Like always, thank you both for the time you put into the episodes.
ReplyDeleteI love this chapter so much. I don't think I picked up on all the implications of Littlefinger's scheme the first read-through. I think most of the mysteries in GoT have been solved in this book though - who sent the assassin after Bran, and now who killed Jon Arryn. Neither of which I ever guessed until it was revealed. Good job GRRM!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I've heard theories about Littlefinger being involved in Tywin and Shae's death, though there are several about Varys.
